Death by Butter Knife

Not having done many big road races in the US lately I forgot what its like to race against these big teams....

Its too fast to go off the front without maximum effort, and even then it takes a lot of luck..and even more stupidity without a concrete goal for blowing yourself out of the water just to stick the move that makes it.

Maybe its the KOM or the sprint points, but event then, when racing it solo-style, going after such a goal is a cause almost as lost as expecting this group you're in to do anything more than give you salty helmet straps and numb legs when the group catches you at the end.

The Butter Knife Lobotomy would be a better term for NRC road racing, b/c that's the only place I'd want the knife to press with any effect while I'm out there waiting for the action to happen. If you're on a team, ok, good, you have a purpose...otherwise, there is none.

It was pretty darn hot last Saturday. Tail wind and Africa savanna heat had us all wishing the butter knife would just dig in, but it wouldn't, for hours. I wonder if Shriver was the one Bread stickering my car?

This weekend Renshaw and I are doing the Urban Assault Race. The winners are after a set of really sweet cruiser bikes, which one can never have too many of.

Nick Martin and I learned in '07's Denver edition that its no cake walk...so its no accident that I chose Renshaw, the Mt Hood Sprinter Jersey winner, and 30 year Portland local, as my partner. Its serious competition out there.
