Time in the Husker state was never something I had been gifted with...

Not that a weekend counts as much time, but it did give me the opportunity to cruise around, get a feel, a smell, and taste the flavor of the town.

There isn't a much better way to get a feel for an area than by riding a bike around/thru/in it.
On the bike you smell neighborhoods, feel the air, see the dirt and grime, taste the hair spray, breath the auto exhaust, chew on the pollen, flowers, gnats, whiff the beer residue, and catch a glimpse of a community by the way they treat walkers, riders, and their own drivers. I'm not here to qualify any of that except that Omaha doesn't offer many bike paths, but if you're not against riding 20 miles of endless rolling sidewalks, you can get around without too much trouble.

And when I say rollers...Endless doesn't do the town justice. It didn't help we were basically in Gretna, and where I wanted to mtb was actually in Iowa, but the leaf skidding was worth the twenty some-odd mile journey, each way. I think...it was quite windy out there.

The Lewis and Clark trail actually reminded me of a very similar trail in Cameron Park, Waco, Texas...the Rockies are quite overrated sometimes. In terms of quick and available riding,...often I'll take the twisty and tacky trails that are found in just about Anywhere, USA.

You have to love this:

op ed time: While on one hand, any student who's a full timer at their respective University should be able to compete on the collegiate racing scene, but when it comes to competing for the title of national champion, why are they letting a foreign national fight it out for the Stars and Stripes jersey? A German national as the US national champ? That's weird.
